Class K missing in small kitchens
Operators in tight spaces frequently assume the hood system covers them. It does not — a Class K portable is required in the kitchen as well, and it is the finding we clear most often here.
Berkeley, CA · NFPA 10 · TITLE 19
Berkeley kitchens are the smallest we work in, and that is the whole story: when every square foot is producing, the extinguisher bracket is the first thing something gets stacked in front of.

Berkeley Fire Department
Berkeley operates its own fire department, established in 1904. Code compliance for city businesses runs through it rather than through the county.

The units are usually fine. What fails is that you cannot reach one without moving a prep table.
Spaces change hands often. A new operator inherits units whose tag lapsed during the handover.
The complete fire extinguisher service specification — what gets inspected, replaced, recharged and documented — is the same wherever we do it.

Berkeley Fire Department can require more frequent service than the state minimum. We confirm before we quote.
Yes. There is no size exemption. If you cook with vegetable oil or animal fat, a Class K unit is required in the kitchen in addition to the hood suppression system. In Berkeley it is the most common finding we clear, precisely because the kitchens are small and operators assume the hood covers it.
Check the tag date. Certification lapses during handovers more often than at any other time, because both the outgoing and incoming operator assume the other dealt with it. We can certify the whole space in one visit before you open.
The Berkeley Fire Department. Berkeley runs its own department rather than contracting fire services to Alameda County.
The 30-second monthly and 90-minute annual battery tests, documented. Most failed inspections here are a dead battery nobody checked — not a missing fixture.
Semi-annual service on Ansul, Pyro-Chem, and compatible industrial systems. Nozzles, fusible links, cylinder pressure — and we coordinate the hood cleaning so it happens in one window instead of three.
We walk the property, count what is there and send a flat-rate quote. No commitment and no sales pressure.
