Oakland, California · Alameda County

Fire protection in Oakland.

The biggest and oldest commercial building stock of the five cities we cover — and the one where a kitchen has most often been remodelled around a hood system that never moved with it.

Authority having jurisdiction

Oakland Fire Department

Oakland runs its own department, and its Fire Prevention Bureau handles code compliance inspections for buildings in the city. Findings come from the city, not the county.

Oakland commercial profile

What we actually find here.

Oakland has the densest concentration of commercial kitchens we service: Jack London Square, Uptown and Downtown, Temescal along Telegraph, and the Fruitvale corridor — which alone has more taquerías and small food businesses per block than anywhere else in the East Bay.

Away from the restaurants, the picture changes completely. West Oakland and the area around the Port are warehouse and light-industrial stock, where the driver is not hood systems but extinguisher count: large open floor plates mean more units simply to stay inside the required travel distance.

A lot of Oakland commercial space sits in buildings put up before the current code existed and remodelled several times since. That history is where most findings come from.

  • Hood systems older than the kitchen around them

A suppression system installed for one cook line, and three remodels later the fryer is somewhere else. The system still has a current tag; the coverage does not match the equipment.

  • Extinguishers blocked by storage

Tight back-of-house in older buildings means pallets and stock end up in front of the bracket. Common, and written up every time.

  • Multi-tenant buildings with one manager

One property manager, eight ground-floor suites, eight different tenants who each assume someone else booked the service. We invoice the manager and tag every suite in one visit.

  • Food trucks based in Oakland, working elsewhere

Mobile units get certified wherever they are parked that morning. Several of ours are based in Fruitvale and trade across the whole Bay.

Questions

What Oakland operators ask us.

Who inspects fire equipment at an Oakland business?

The Oakland Fire Department, through its Fire Prevention Bureau. Oakland operates its own department rather than contracting to the county, so inspections, correction notices and re-inspections all come from the city. What we do is make sure that when they walk in, the tags are current and the records are there.

My restaurant is in an old Oakland building. Does that change anything?

It changes what usually fails. Older buildings have been remodelled more, and the two things that drift are hood nozzle coverage — because appliances moved — and extinguisher access, because storage grew into the space. Neither is expensive to fix if it is caught during a service visit instead of during an inspection.

Can you service several Oakland properties on one invoice?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do here. We schedule a portfolio together, tag every unit across all of them, and send one report per property plus one invoice for the lot.

How fast can you get to Oakland?

Oakland is the centre of our service area, so same-week scheduling is normal and same-day is often possible. If your inspection is tomorrow, call — do not use the form.
