San Leandro, California · Alameda County

Fire protection in San Leandro.

The one city of the five where the fire authority is not the city itself. San Leandro contracts both fire protection and fire code administration to Alameda County — which changes who inspects you and who you talk to.

Authority having jurisdiction

Alameda County Fire Department

San Leandro has contracted fire protection to the Alameda County Fire Department since 1995, and ACFD also provides fire code administration for the city. Your inspection and your correction notice come from the county, not from a San Leandro department.

What we actually find here.

San Leandro is more industrial than it looks from the freeway. The corridors along Davis Street, Doolittle and out toward the Marina hold food manufacturing, commissary kitchens, cold storage and distribution — properties with high extinguisher counts and mixed hazard classes in the same building.

Downtown along East 14th and the Bayfair area is a different business: restaurants, retail and service tenants, where hood systems and Class K coverage drive the work.

That split matters. A commissary kitchen and a sit-down restaurant in the same city need different equipment on different intervals, and the property manager is frequently the same person for both.

  • Commissary and production kitchens

Bigger cook lines, longer hood runs, more nozzles and more fusible links than a restaurant. Also more appliance changes as production shifts.

  • Mixed hazard classes under one roof

A warehouse with a paint or solvent area needs Class B coverage in that zone and ordinary coverage everywhere else. The count and the placement both change.

  • County jurisdiction confusion

Tenants who moved from Oakland or Hayward expect a city inspector and get a county one. It is the same code; it is a different contact and a different programme.

  • Cold storage and loading docks

Travel distance across a large floor plate is what sets the number of extinguishers, and dock doors change the path someone would actually walk.

Questions

What San Leandro operators ask us.

Who inspects fire equipment in San Leandro?

The Alameda County Fire Department. San Leandro has contracted fire protection to ACFD since 1995, and the county also handles fire code administration for the city. So unlike Oakland or Berkeley, your inspector is a county inspector — same code, different department.

Does county jurisdiction change what I have to do?

Not the underlying requirements — NFPA 10, NFPA 17A and California Title 19 apply the same way. What changes is the inspection programme and who you deal with. We confirm current expectations with the district before quoting, which matters more here than anywhere else we work.

How many extinguishers does a warehouse need?

It comes out of the hazard class of what is stored and the maximum distance someone should have to walk to reach one — not out of the square footage alone. A high-piled storage area and an ordinary one in the same building get different answers. We walk it and tell you the number.

We run a commissary kitchen. Is that serviced like a restaurant?

Same standards, more system. Production kitchens have longer hood runs, more nozzles and more fusible links, and the cook line changes more often as production shifts. The semi-annual interval is the same; the visit takes longer.
